How can women go into politics?
How to become visible and experience failure?
How to get involved in decision making?
Deputies of the Lviv City Council Victoria Dovzhyk, Ulyana Pak and Yulia Gvozdovych shared their experiences in local politics during the discussion “The role of women in politics and democracy building”.
Often, other women become the biggest criticisms of women in politics and all of their actions are viewed under a magnifying glass, which is why the failures are much more visible. Where men can make mistakes, women are not forgiven.
The deputies spoke about their experience of the election campaign, prejudices and stereotypes about majority women, as well as the illness of many active women – the so-called “impostor syndrome”, when all achievements are not due to hard work, but to chance.
Hrystyna Kit, the chairwoman of the Ukrainian Women Lawyers Association “JurFem”, who moderated the meeting, noted that women in many professions are facing such problems, so it is worth trying to go beyond your own established views and ask yourself: “Would we ask this question / these requirements in front of her husband? ”. This way, you can build some solidarity between women in the profession that will help everyone succeed.
Thank you for organizing the event of the School of Democracy in Lviv from the Eastern European Center for Multiparty Democracy – EECMD, and to everyone present for an exchange of views.
