On March 15, 2022, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to terminate Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe in the context of Article 8 of the Statute. It means, that from March 16, 2022, it is officially believed that Russia has terminated its membership in this international organization. On the eve of this, Russia, feeling the inevitable expulsion from membership, independently announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe. It should be noted that immediately after the occupier invaded our country, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to suspend Russia’s membership in the committee and in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In the light of recent events, let’s understand what membership in the Council of Europe entails and what the aggressor state loses as a result of the termination of its membership in this international community.
