Violence against women and gender-based violence: what is the difference

This analytical material is about the concepts of violence against women and gender-based violence. Gender-based violence is a phenomenon that is deeply rooted in gender inequality and still is one of the most serious human rights violations. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on whether it is identical to violence against women or whether it is a broader concept.

Lots documents, which contain a definition of “violence against women”, have been adopted at the international level to eradicate violence against women (including the Istanbul Convention and the UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women). The concept of gender-based violence, however, has not yet been formally defined in international law. The terms “gender-based violence” and “violence against women” are often used as synonyms.The analytical material reveals the definitions of these two terms and analyzes whether they can be used interchangeably.
